How To Start a Running Routine and Stick With It

Running is one of the most popular forms of exercise in the world, and for good reason. According to the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, even five to 10 minutes a day of running is enough to extend life by several years, compared with not running at all.

But starting a running routine can be challenging for some — and sticking with it even more so.

In this blog, we’ll explore the best way to start a running routine — and make it a key player in your overall fitness journey.

Starting a running routine

Starting a running routine can be intimidating, but the key is to take it slow and steady. It’s about having a focused, consistent plan that doesn’t go too hard all at once and leaves you wiped out and prone to injuries.

When starting a running routine, it’s important to set a S.M.A.R.T. goal and to track your progress. Having a “Specific,” “Measurable,” “Attainable,” “Relevant,” and “Timebound” goal helps motivate and inspire you. And what’s better than setting a goal? Reaching it, of course!

To take the first step in your running routine, start with short distances and gradually increase your mileage over time.

But be sure to remember that sticking with a running routine requires discipline. One way to stay motivated is to find a running buddy or join a running group. Having someone to run with can make the experience more enjoyable and keep you accountable.

Another way to stay motivated is to reward yourself for reaching milestones. The iFIT platform, a paid subscription available through your NordicTrack equipment, offers digital rewards for Challenges you complete and milestones you reach, so you can always celebrate and remember your accomplishments!

What is a good running routine for beginners?

For beginners, start with a simple running routine that gradually increases in intensity.

A good running routine for beginners is to start with a brisk walk, followed by a 30-second jog, and then a 90-second walk. Repeat this cycle for 20 minutes, three times per week.

But don’t forget your warm-up and cool-down. Take 5 minutes before and after your run with a slow walk and end with mobility or stretching exercises after to help prevent soreness later on or the next day.

As your endurance and strength improve, try gradually increasing the duration of the jogging intervals and decreasing the walking intervals.

How do I start running if I’m not a runner?

If you aren’t a runner, the thought of starting a running routine may seem daunting. However, with a little bit of patience and persistence, anyone can become a runner. The key is to start slowly and build up your endurance over time.

One way to start running is to use a treadmill, like the NordicTrack Commercial Series treadmills. With the help of expert iFIT Trainers, your machine’s incline, decline, and speed are automatically adjusted, making it easier to start at a manageable pace and gradually increase the intensity of your workouts over time.
